Laboratory Details

• Lab attendees must register for General Session to attend wet labs, except Technician Sunday-only Program registration
• Additional fee required for all wet labs, except Technician Sunday-only Program registration
• The following two labs are presented each year with the basic details as listed.
  • Basic Avian Techniques - 3 hours on Sunday evening
    • Hands-on lab
    • Introduction to basic techniques pertinent to avian practice
    • Techniques taught change from year to year but usually include 
      • handling
      • physical examination
      • venipuncture
      • bacteriologic and hematologic sampling
      • cover slip slide preparation
      • injections
      • splinting
      • bandaging
      • wing and nail clip
      • nasal flush
      • oral medications

    • Fee for 2011 is $150
    • This lab is included at no additional cost for Technician Sunday-only Program registration
  • Advanced Avian Techniques - 3 hours on Monday evening
    • Hands-on lab
    • Introduction to advanced techniques pertinent to avian practice
    • Techniques taught change from year to year but usually include 
      • Intravenous catheterization, fluid administration and bandaging
      • Intraosseous catheterization, fluid administration and bandaging
      • Bone marrow aspiration
      • Bandaging the IO catheter
      • Sinus aspirate and flushing
      • Tracheal wash
      • Crop lavage
      • Air sac cannulation
      • Obtaining blood for transfusion purposes
      • Feather/skin biopsy
      • Ingluviotomy or crop biopsy
